At major Chinese glasses markets, same-day pickup for standard single-vision lenses is normal, not an express upgrade. Plenty of shops take you from eye exam to finished glasses in 45 minutes.

“Same-day pickup” does have hard requirements. Your prescription decides everything.

1. Why China Can Do Same-Day Pickup

The core secret is four characters: front store, back factory.

China’s eyewear industry is heavily concentrated in a few manufacturing clusters (Danyang in Jiangsu, Henggang in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai). Many shops inside glasses markets have the machining workshop downstairs. The optometrist measures your prescription up front, the data goes straight to the edger below. Stock lens plus in-house grinding, and the lens comes out in 20 minutes to 2 hours, with no shipping middleman.

2. Which Prescriptions Qualify for Same-Day Pickup?

Prescription TypeSame-Day?Pickup TimeNotes
Standard single-vision myopia (-0.50 to -6.00)✅ Yes20–60 minutesStock lenses widely available; most shops have them
Low astigmatism (≤ 100)✅ Yes1–2 hoursMost shops stock it
Moderate astigmatism (100–200)⚠️ Most can1–2 hoursDepends on shop stock; ask before you pay
High myopia (-6.00 to -8.00)⚠️ Most can1–2 hours1.67/1.74 high-index lenses; some shops need to source; ask before paying
Strong prescriptions (-8.00 and up)❌ Usually no1–3 daysHigh-index custom lenses; order required; ask before paying
High astigmatism (>200)❌ Usually no1–3 daysCustom cylinder; not stock; ask before paying
Progressive lenses (presbyopia + myopia)❌ No3–7 daysNeeds professional measurement plus custom; a few shops stock them; ask before paying
Brand custom lenses (Zeiss SmartLife, etc.)❌ No3–7 daysNeeds brand-side custom manufacturing; ask before paying
Children’s myopia-control defocus lenses❌ No3–7 daysBrand-customized
Photochromic / polarized lenses✅ Most can1–2 hoursStock lenses available; depends on shop inventory; ask before paying
Blue-light-blocking / anti-fog lenses✅ Yes20–60 minutesStandard stock

The more common your prescription, the faster the pickup. Standard myopia plus low astigmatism: 90% of glasses-market shops can do it same-day. Strong prescriptions, high astigmatism, progressives, and brand custom lenses, plan on “3–7 days.”

3. Three Preconditions for Same-Day Pickup

  1. The shop has stock lenses in your prescription. The more common the power, the better the stock coverage. Wholesale-grade markets like Danyang and Guangzhou Renmin Zhong Lu stock most sphere powers from -0.25 to -8.00. Smaller-city optical shops may be out of stock.
  2. The frame you picked is in stock. Popular shapes (black frames, round frames) are always available; less common styles may need sourcing. To be safe, pick a sample frame that’s actually hanging on the wall.
  3. The exam data is accurate. The exam takes about 20 minutes and gives you a Chinese-language prescription slip (sphere, cylinder, axis, pupillary distance). Shops doing same-day pickup usually do the exam on site. Don’t walk in with an old prescription.

The most efficient play: arrive at opening (most glasses markets open at 9:00), get the exam and pick frames, eat lunch, then pick up and try on in the afternoon. The whole thing fits in half a day. Hours and addresses for each city’s optical market are on the where to buy overview.

4. Pickup Speeds by City

City / MarketPickup Speed (Standard Single-Vision)Notes
Danyang International Glasses City20–45 minutesThe world’s lens capital; front-store-back-factory at its most extreme
Shanghai (Qingyun Road / Sanye)30–60 minutesTop pick for in-city fitting
Guangzhou Renmin Zhong Lu30–60 minutesWholesale plus retail mixed
Shenzhen Henggang30–90 minutesPopular day-trip stop for Hong Kong visitors
Beijing Panjiayuan45 minutes to 2 hoursWeekends are crowded; queues slow things down
Chengdu, Hangzhou, Wuhan, etc.1–2 hoursTypical speed

Data from Getting Glasses in China’s on-the-ground records across optical markets (price and pickup-time stats based on 623 actual receipts). Note: show up after 4 PM and pickup may roll to the next day. The machining staff leave early. Don’t cut it close.

5. What Does Same-Day Pickup Cost?

Same-day pickup doesn’t mean cheap:

CombinationPrice Range (RMB)Notes
Basic frame plus standard single-vision lenses¥100–300Lowest in Danyang; includes frame plus lenses plus exam
Brand frame plus standard lenses¥300–800Depends on frame brand
Domestic 1.60/1.67 lenses¥200–500Medium thickness; strong value
Brand lenses (entry Zeiss / Essilor)¥500–1,200Stock lenses for same-day; custom series require waiting
Add blue-light or anti-fog coating+¥50–200Upcharge and grinding done on the spot

For comparison: a standard pair of single-vision glasses in the US runs $200–600 (about ¥1,450–4,350); in the UK, £150–400. Spend ¥300 in China on a basic pair and you can save 50%–87%. The savings calculator computes the exact gap for your prescription.

6. Check on the Spot Before You Leave

  1. Try them on for 10 minutes. Look far and near. Confirm no dizziness, no distortion.
  2. Match the lens specs to the prescription slip (the power sticker is on the packaging, check sphere, cylinder, axis).
  3. Inspect lens surface: no scratches, no bubbles, even coating.
  4. Inspect the frame: tight screws, symmetric nose pads, smooth temple hinges.
  5. Flag any problem on the spot. Manufacturing errors get remade for free, that’s your right. Walk out the door and come back, and you’ll be negotiating.

The full 12-point pickup checklist is in the “pickup inspection” section of the buying process guide. Save it to your phone and run through it at pickup.

Special note: after you walk out with the glasses, wear them for 2–3 hours. If you feel dizzy, see distortion, or eye strain, go back the same day and ask for a remake. Most shops fix problems found that day for free.

7. What Can a 20-Minute Eye Exam Actually Tell You?

“Same-day pickup” doesn’t mean a sloppy exam. A proper glasses-market exam is complete, it’s just fast. Chinese optometrists run dozens of patients a day and the process is highly polished:

  1. Intake (2 min): age, occupation, screen vs. driving habits, old glasses history, eye-disease history.
  2. Auto-refraction (2 min): autorefractor gives a rough sphere, cylinder, axis, your “starting power.”
  3. Phoropter fine-tune (10–15 min): the core step. The optometrist has you read the eye chart, dialing in sphere (myopia or hyperopia), cylinder (astigmatism), and axis one step at a time until red-green balance and binocular balance are both hit.
  4. Pupillary distance (1 min): measures PD so the optical centers land on your pupils.
  5. Trial frame adaptation (3–5 min): wear the trial frame, walk around, look far and near, confirm no dizziness.

What a 20-minute exam catches: myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism powers, PD, binocular balance. What it doesn’t: presbyopia (needs a near-vision add, done when ordering progressives) and eye-disease screening (an exam isn’t an ophthalmology exam. If your vision has dropped sharply, go to a hospital).

Important: after the exam, always ask for the Chinese prescription slip (sphere SPH, cylinder CYL, axis AXIS, PD). It’s your right, and it’s your evidence in any later after-sales dispute. Any shop that won’t give you a slip, move to the next one.

8. How Does a Lens Go From “a Piece of Glass” to “Glasses”?

Understanding the grinding flow tells you where the “same-day” time actually goes, and why some shops are fast and others slow:

StepTimeNotes
Lens pick / material pull5 minPulls the correct power lens blank from stock
Edging5–15 minCNC edger shapes the lens to the frame
Chamfer / polish3–5 minRemoves burrs; polishes edges
Groove / drill (rimless frames)5–10 minExtra steps for rimless or semi-rimless
Mounting5–10 minLens goes into frame; position adjusted
QC3–5 minVerify power, PD, optical center
Total (with stock on hand)30–60 minutesFast shops 20 min; slow shops 2 hours

Why do some shops take 20 minutes and others 2 hours? Three reasons: (1) equipment age (newer edgers are faster and more accurate); (2) whether the shop is “front-store-back-factory” (workshop downstairs vs. sent out); (3) queue depth (10 pairs ahead of you, you wait). When you pick a shop, just ask: “Is the grinding done in the shop? Roughly how long?” Shops that answer crisply with a specific time (“within half an hour”) are basically reliable.

9. Refractive Index: The Key Spec for High-Prescription Same-Day Pickup

Talk “same-day pickup” and you can’t skip refractive index. It drives lens thickness and also affects stock availability:

IndexPrescription RangeThickness (at -6.00)Price Range
1.56Below -3.00Thicker¥100–200
1.60-3.00 to -6.00Moderate¥200–400
1.67-5.00 to -8.00Thin¥300–600
1.74Above -8.00Thinnest¥600–1,500

For strong prescriptions (above -6.00): 1.67/1.74 high-index lenses are “premium stock.” Not every shop carries every power. The play: when you walk the market, ask shops “do you have 1.74 in -7.50 in stock?” Translate the question in advance on your phone and show it to the shop. Shops that need to source can be skipped.

Don’t force a low-index lens just to get same-day pickup. -8.00 in a 1.56 lens is essentially a wine-bottle bottom: ugly and heavy. Same-day pickup only works when the lens is also right, not just fast.

Quick Answers

Q1: Is same-day pickup lower quality than custom lenses?

No quality difference. Same-day pickup uses brand or factory stock lenses (standard product off the same production line). Custom lenses are just “made to your special parameters.” At standard prescriptions, optical quality is identical. What actually differs is high-end custom lenses (progressives, defocus, special coatings). That’s a feature difference, not a quality difference.

Q2: Can I bring my own frame and just have lenses fitted?

Yes, most shops take it. Bringing your own frame is usually cheaper than buying a full set (you save the frame cost); expect about ¥100–300 for the labor plus lenses. Two notes: (1) the optician will first check whether your frame is suitable (too old, misshapen, or unusual material and they may decline); (2) most shops won’t cover damage to a customer-provided frame. For a valuable frame, pick a larger shop.

Q3: Can I haggle on same-day pickup?

Yes, and you should. Glasses-market prices are flexible. Knocking 20%–30% off the sticker price is normal, and margins widen on holidays or slow seasons. The play: open with “I want two pairs” (bulk discount), then ask “can you do better,” then drop “the shop next door is cheaper.” Three steps usually lands you 30% below sticker. The haggling guide has the details.

Q4: Do the exam and the fitting have to be at the same shop?

No. You can get a free exam at shop A, take the slip, and order at shop B (prescriptions work nationwide in China). Some travelers like to get the exam at a big shop (better equipment, more patience) and then get lenses fitted at a small shop (lower price). But note: fitting and after-sales at the same shop is the simplest (prescription issues get remade for free). If you split them, disputes can turn into a “your exam vs. our grinding” blame game.

Q5: After pickup, I notice the power is off. Can it be remade for free?

Yes, that’s industry standard. Manufacturing errors (wrong power, off PD, wrong optical center) get remade for free; that’s a statutory right (China’s Consumer Protection Law covers “free remake for manufacturing error”). Keep the original prescription slip, that’s your comparison evidence. If you find the problem within 2–3 hours of leaving, go back the same day, that’s the smoothest route.

Q6: Is same-day pickup good for “premium brand lenses” (Zeiss SmartLife, Essilor Xperience)?

No. Premium custom lenses (special designs) have to be manufactured by the brand, and start at 3–7 days. The brand lenses you can pick up same-day are only stock standard lenses (entry Zeiss A-series, Essilor Crizal series, etc.). If you want a premium custom lens, order it on day 1 of your trip. Don’t count on same-day pickup.
