Buying glasses online in China
Taobao and JD offer convenient online shopping with delivery to your hotel. But buying prescription glasses online is complicated — we recommend buying prescription lenses offline first.
We strongly recommend buying prescription glasses offline at an eyewear market.Ordering prescription glasses online requires accurate PD (pupillary distance) measurement, frame try-on, and prescription verification — all hard to do remotely. If the prescription is wrong, returning from abroad is very difficult. Online shopping is better suited to: non-prescription sunglasses, fashion frames, accessories, and replacement parts.
Taobao
China’s largest online shopping platform, with huge numbers of individual sellers and brand shops selling eyewear. Good for: fashion frames, sunglasses, accessories. Prices range from RMB 20（USD 2.97 / GBP 2.21） to over RMB 2,000（USD 297.32 / GBP 220.73）.

China’s second-largest e-commerce platform, known for fast delivery and authenticity guarantees. JD self-operated goods are sourced and shipped by JD, making authenticity comparatively reliable. Good for: branded glasses, sunglasses.

How to ship orders to your hotel
You can have online orders delivered directly to the hotel where you are staying. Most hotels in China accept parcels on behalf of guests.
Confirm the hotel accepts parcels
Call or message the hotel before ordering. Ask: “Can the hotel accept parcels for guests? Is there a handling fee?” Most mid-range and upscale hotels accept them free; some budget hotels may charge RMB 5–10（USD 0.74–1.49 / GBP 0.55–1.10） per item. Confirm in advance.
Fill in the delivery address
Use the following format:
Recipient:Your name (as on your passport) + “Guest”
Phone:Hotel front desk phone (not a foreign number — couriers cannot make international calls)
Address:Full hotel address + “Care of front desk”
Example:XX Hotel Front Desk, No. XX East Nanjing Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai — Attn: Zhang San (Guest)
Track your delivery
Both Taobao and JD offer real-time logistics tracking. You will be notified when the parcel arrives. The front desk will keep it for you — just collect it when you return to the hotel.
Collect at the front desk
Show your passport or room key card at the front desk to collect the parcel. Some hotels require a signature. Check that the outer packaging is intact before you leave the desk.
How to return items through the hotel front desk
Need to return something? Most hotels can help you send a return parcel. Here is the process.
Request a return in the app
Taobao: go to “My Orders” → find the order → tap “Refund/Return” → choose “Return for refund” → select a reason → submit. Once the seller approves, they will provide the return address. JD is similar: request after-sales service in “My Orders.”
Ask the front desk for help
Go to the front desk and say (or show the following text): “I’d like to return a Taobao/JD parcel — could you call a courier for me?” Most hotels will contact a courier for you (SF Express is reliable) and help fill in the waybill.
Pack the item
Put the item back in its original packaging with all accessories included. Add a note with your order number and seal the parcel. The hotel provides the waybill — fill in the return address shown in the app.
Pay the return shipping fee
Domestic return shipping usually costs RMB 10–20（USD 1.49–2.97 / GBP 1.10–2.21）. Pay the courier in cash or via WeChat/Alipay. Keep the tracking number. The front desk can help you track it if needed.
Most Taobao items support “7-day no-reason returns.” However,Custom lenses (including lenses made to prescription) are not eligible for 7-day no-reason returns——returns are allowed only for quality issues or prescription production errors. This is another important reason we recommend buying prescription glasses offline.

How foreigners can pay on Taobao/JD
Taobao and JD support several payment methods, and foreign travelers can pay in the following ways.
International credit cards
Both Taobao and JD accept international credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard (via Alipay/WeChat channels). Overseas card payments: no handling fee for single transactions up to RMB 200（USD 29.73 / GBP 22.07）; a 3% fee on the total transaction amount above RMB 200（USD 29.73 / GBP 22.07）. Some shops may not accept international cards — confirm before ordering.
Alipay
Alipay supports binding international credit cards (Visa/Mastercard), and foreign travelers can register Alipay International. Most Taobao and JD shops accept Alipay.
WeChat Pay
WeChat Pay also supports binding international credit cards. JD accepts WeChat Pay, as do some Taobao shops. We recommend completing real-name verification and card binding while still in China.
Cash (not recommended)
Online purchases cannot be paid in cash directly. Cash on delivery (COD) is now rare on Taobao and JD and inconvenient for foreign travelers. Arrange an electronic payment method in advance.

Important reminders for buying glasses online
1. We strongly recommend buying prescription glasses offline.Ordering prescription glasses online means providing your own prescription and PD; if anything is wrong, exchanges are difficult, and returns from abroad are nearly impossible.
2. Non-prescription items can be bought online.Sunglasses (plano), fashion frames, cases, lens cleaner, and other accessories are well suited to online purchase and are usually cheaper.
3. Use the hotel as your delivery address.Always fill in the hotel’s full address and front desk phone, and mark “Guest” after the recipient’s name. Confirm in advance that the hotel accepts parcels.
4. Allow enough delivery time.Domestic delivery usually takes 2–5 days, so place orders a few days into your trip — not the day before you leave China.
5. The front desk can help with returns.To return an item, request it in the app, then ask the front desk to call a courier and fill in the waybill. Return shipping usually costs RMB 10–20（USD 1.49–2.97 / GBP 1.10–2.21）.
6. Pay attention to authenticity verification.Buying branded glasses online carries counterfeit risk, especially from individual Taobao sellers. Choose official brand flagship stores or JD self-operated.
